A description is given of the morphological characters of Phoma section Phyllostictoides and its taxonomical position is discussed. A key is provided for the varieties of the type species Phoma exigua Desm., followed by a host-fungus and a fungus-host index. Two new varieties are proposed: Phoma exigua var. forsythiae (Sacc.) comb. nov. and Phoma exigua var. noackiana (Allesch.) comb. nov. The synonymy, selected literature, a representative culture and data on ecology and distribution are given for all varieties.

A number of pycnidial fungi described from Atriplex and Chenopodium, in Europe, North- and South-America are brought into synonymy with Phoma variospora nom. nov., Phoma dimorphospora (Speg.) comb. nov. and Ascochyta caulina (P. Karst.) comb. nov. Descriptions of these species in vivo and in vitro are given and the differentiating characters are discussed. A. caulina represents the type species of Chaetodiplodia P. Karst., which genus is reduced to the level of a section of Ascochyta Lib.

Three plant-inhabiting fungi with tetraradiate conidia, Tricornispora bambusae Bonar, Fumagopsis triglifioides Speg., and Eriosporella calami (Niessl) Höhn., the type species of monotypic genera, are redescribed and illustrated from type specimens. These genera are regarded as distinct. Fumagopsis is possibly closely related to Kazulia Nag Raj. Since the type specimen of Tridentaria Preuss did not bear a fungus which agreed with the very brief original description, the genus Tridentaria Preuss is regarded as doubtful. The nematode-trapping Hyphomycetes formerly placed in Tridentaria should be reclassified.

A method is presented to derive an operational phenetic species concept for the Hebeloma crustuliniforme complex in northwestern Europe. The complex was found to consist of at least 22 biological species (intercompatibility groups; ICGs). Almost none of these biological species could be recognised unambiguously by morphological criteria. It is therefore necessary to base a phenetic species concept on combinations of biological species. However, such species delimitation must be performed within an explicitly phylogenetic context. It is crucial therefore to have a reliable estimate of the phylogeny of 22 biological species in that complex. New and rare hoverflies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae). Paragus albifrons (Fallén), P. bicolor (Fabricius), Sphegina verecunda Collin, Neoascia annexa (O.F. Müller), Callicera aenea (Fabricius), Cheilosia caerulescens (Meigen), C. chloris (Meigen), C. flavipes (Panzer), Chamaesyrphus scaevoides (Fallén), Xylota coeruleiventris Zetterstedt, Merodon rufus Meigen and Eristalis picea (Fallén) are recorded with full details for the first time from The Netherlands. Some of these species have been listed by other authors but without any details. Rhagoletis indifferens, a new tephritid fly to the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Tephritidae) Rhagoletis indifferens is a North-American species which, in Europe, was known from Switzerland only. In August 1999 a specimen was caught with a Malaise-trap in a garden in Burgh (province of Zeeland). Later the larvae were found in the berries of Prunus serotina in the coastal dunes near Burgh. They were collected and raised. In June 2000 the first adult emerged. In August 2000 the adults were also found in the field.

The rearing of the botfly Cephenemyia auribarbis (Diptera: Oestridae) After several failures we finally succeeded in rearing botflies Cephenemyia from third-instar larvae. From a red deer shot at 13 March 1998 about one hundred larvae of Cephenemyia auribarbis (Meigen, 1824) were collected. Ten individuals reached the pupal stage. After 22 days, one fullgrown male died in the pupa, and two males emerged and lived for 17 and 18 days respectively. This is one of the few recorded succesful attempts to rear botflies.

The samples classified with the genera Eulimella (partly), Anisocycla, Syrnola, Chrysallida and Odostomella are dealt with in this paper. In total 70 species are reported from the research area, 24 of which are described as new to science. A lectotype of Obeliscus gracillima Smith, 1872 (= Eulimella variabilis de Folin, 1870) and neotypes of Chrysallida multicostata (Jeffreys, 1884) and Jaminia obtusa Brown, 1827, are designated.

Odostomia nuttalli spec. nov. and O. coluhensis spec. nov. are described from the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Columbian Amazonia. A third pyramidellid snail is also diagnosed. These species are indicators for marine influence in the late Middle to early Late Miocence of Western Amazonia. Some ecological implications are discussed.

In oktober 1993 vond ik te Wierden (km-hok 238-487) langs een voetpad een kaasjeskruid met zeer kleine bloemen. Determinatie met de Heukels’ Flora¹ deed me – naar later zou blijken ten onrechte – uitkomen op Kleinbloemig kaasjeskruid: de bloemen waren zeer klein en de vruchten hadden een scherp randje. De plant heb ik ter nadere controle aan Pieter Stolwijk afgegeven, maar hij vond toen geen aanleiding om aan mijn determinatie te twijfelen. Publicatie volgde in de Nieuwsbrief FLORON-FWT.² In oktober 1996 vond ik opnieuw een kleinbloemig kaasjeskruid, nu te Vriezenveen (km-hok 238-490). Er stonden zeker 10 exemplaren, bloeiend en vruchtdragend, naast een mestopslagplaats bij de ingang van een perceel aardappelen. De planten waren buitengewoon sterk...
